"Pearl"

dir. Ti West, 2022

While I enjoyed "X", I actually was even more engaged by its prequel, "Pearl". It provides an origin story for its titular character, the main antagonist of "X". Pearl is a young woman who longs to be a star, but feels trapped on her family farm, with her strict mother and sickly father. And under the surface, something dark is bubbling, ready to emerge at any moment.

This movie is a fascinating, well-paced delve into Pearl's character, I found myself both pitying her and horrified of her. I think this works so well largely due to Mia Goth's amazing performance. I was particularly drawn in by her monologue near the end, she sells it incredibly well. The slow, tense build-up to her inevitable break is just stunning to watch, it's like a classic tragedy.

I also thought the movie was visually amazing, both the cinematography and the creative editing are so well done. Overall just a very enjoyable and engaging film. Catch it in theaters if you can!
